Buckhorn Mountain Lake (Day 3) – Payette National Forest, Idaho

Day Three starts with a series of sunrise shots.

Shooting in low light without a tripod is a challenge and the image quality is not as good but the subject matter makes up for those drawbacks.

Atmospheric conditions……general smoke. Also, the slight morning breeze is killing my reflections!

Actual sunrise and the breeze has settled just in time.

“Here comes the sun!”

Random picture of Tom fishing.

After a wonderful early morning, we decide to go for a hike. Our objective is the “Gunsight” and the ridge in the background overlooking the Buckhorn Lakes.

To get to that far ridge we need to walk around the lake.

This image is from the same spot as the last just in landscape format.

Hiking across to the Gunsight reveals the smokey views down Buckhorn Creek.

Approaching the Gunsight. This is one of the most unique geologic features in the Payette National Forest. It is extremely hard to get to but is a very magical spot.

Tom makes his way through the boulders as we approach the Gunsight.

Looking down the Gunsight into the Lake Fork Creek Drainage.

This is the view from the same spot down the Buckhorn Creek Drainage.

Why do they call this the Gunsight? Here is a recent image from the Crystal Lake area looking across to the Gunsight. It is about 7 miles from this spot to the Gunsight.

As we make our way up the ridge above the Buckhorn Lakes, this image looks back down our route from Buckhorn Mountain Lake. In the distance, Vic’s peak on the left and Rapid Peak on the right. Check out the views from those peaks here.

The smokey view towards the north with Nick Peak in the distance on the left and Upper Buckhorn Lake mind image on the right. Nick Peak, yes, been there, here is the trip report.

Tom traverses back to camp. The saddle on the left is where we overlooked the Buckhorn Lakes. As long as we are reminiscing, here is a trip report when John and I did almost the exact hike as today. Interesting that it was almost exactly 4 years ago so also shows the fall colors.

Finally, back at Buckhorn Mountain Lake, there seems to be no bad angle to shoot this area.
