Great Basin National Park, Nevada

It’s been a while since this bike has been on Davefaitlemonde! I’m still on the injured reserve list for hiking and backpacking so I brought my urban assault vehicle to attack this mountain climb.

From our campground we have a wonderful paved road which climbs about 2500 feet up towards Wheeler Peak to high country trailheads.

This time of year there aren’t many people using the road so it screams road climb!

As we climb on this wonderful day we have amazing views of Nevada’s Great Basin.

Tom and Susan grinding up the mountain.

We inch our way closer to Wheeler Peak.

About 2/3 the way up the climb, the road is closed….. a helpful park ranger said it’s just closed to cars…. YEAH!

Wheeler Peak (on the right) is the second tallest peak in Nevada. At 13,065 feet it is 80 feet shorter than Boundary Peak which is on the Nevada – California border.

Notice the glacier at the base of the rock face!

At the top of the road, we take a break. Elevation here is about 10,000 feet, temperature here was in the high 40s.

Quakies!

At the end of the road is the trailhead for Wheeler Peak Summit. The trail is about 8 miles round trip and a climb of another 3000 feet…… not today!

On the way down, I stop to warm up and shoot far away peaks. I believe the peaks on the horizon are the Brian Head Area Mountains in Utah.
