The PF – GF gravel loop is a Long Valley Classic and one I have not done for a fist full of years. Tom requested the ride so Rich, Barb, and I joined in. After a chilly start, we were soon enjoying a wonderful day and fall colors nearing their peak. Here we have an interesting view of Jug Mountain.

One of four riders today is still bike racing, if only to a small degree. One thing I have learned about riding with bike racers is they always skimp on food and beverage. If one undersells the ride distance and difficulty and if you are vague about upcoming turns, they stay in sight all day and eventually they end up off the back!

When we arrived at the start of the ride, Rich threw in a bonus technical climb which was handy in softening everybody’s legs.

Recent logging made for great views off this stretch of road.

Big western and autumn skies.

After a couple hours of riding and climbing, we still have about 30 miles to go.

What a day!

After a section of Payette Pavement, we roll along smooth pine needle covered roads, it felt a little like my days rolling around the Blackwater State Forest in Florida…… except for the 4000 plus feet of climbing!

This route takes us fairly close to the Needles Summit. Unfortunately it is tough to find a window through the trees for a good photo. From here, the camera stayed in the pocket as we race downhill then enter survival mode back to the start.
