Snowslide Peak – Payette National Forest, Idaho

Scroll down to content

Every year in and around Memorial Day we climb Snowslide Peak….. It’s been a tradition in my hiking group for many years. This year, I put the word out and heard crickets with the exception of from Anne, Coco, and a potato farmer.

The potato farmer needed to tend his fields but Anne and Coco were a full go. After an intense first 1800 feet of elevation, it’s always nice to see the welcoming meadow.

Golden Lake is going to clear ice early this year.

After leaving the lake, we worked our way up on firm snow.

The block basin under Platt Peak. Many times we climb this with full snow cover but with a relatively lake climb and low snow year we decide to avoid the blocks and move up the ridge on the left.

At the ridge, the views almost take your breath away.

There is still quite a bit of snow above 7500 feet.

Coco wore her picture takin outfit. While on the ridge she spent quite a bit of time on her virtual string cheese tether.

The views of Platt Peak from the Snowslide Peak Ridge are stunning.

It’s not until late in the climb that you get your first view of the Snowslide Summit.

Snowslide Peak with Sawtooth Peak to the right.

Glacier walking….. soon the string cheese tether is replace with a real one.

Platt Peak as seen from higher up the ridge.

Views from the summit. What a gorgeous day! Notice Platt Peak below us now. On the summit we saw no crickets but lots of lady bugs…… and thank god for those potato farmers because these chips were good!

On the way down we stop again at Golden Lake. What a great climb!
