Morgan Lake Ridge – Payette National Forest, Idaho

This time of year, the crowd I run around with is looking to find hikes with solid elevation gain. We need to start our preparation for bigger goals later this summer. It’s nice to start low and aim high and that was the case with what I am calling Morgan Lake Ridge.

As we start to gain elevation, Art looks back down over the edge.

After gaining a couple thousand feet of elevation, we finally talked Scott into letting us have lunch. We did have a special guest today, Scott’s nephew, Owen…… Owen as it turns out is 15 years old and hikes like a deer!

The higher we went, the more the trudging increased.

Although it doesn’t necessarily look like it in these images, snowshoes would have been nice…… I wish I would have thought of that before the hike!

Granite Mountain in the distance. The views were nice off this ridge.

While the snow is thin down low, there is a solid snowpack above 7000 feet. Definitely winter up here. In the distance, the Seven Devil Mountains.

Our stretch goal was to get to Morgan Lake which is about a 14 mile round trip but the going got pretty hard in the snow so we just went to the trail junction and called it good. We ended up with just short of 12 miles.

On the way down I shot this image of Pollock Mountain.

One last image of Scott taking in the view before the group blew up on the descent. I took a short cut, Owen ran down the trail, Art took a nap and Scott just shook his head. A great day in the Idaho wilderness with an amazing crew!
