Today we make the short drive to the city of Nimes.

Like much of South France, this area was all part of the Roman Empire and guess what, they built a Colosseum here too! This one is actually a bit smaller than it’s more famous brethren in Rome but it was built first. Around the 1st century.

Oh my goodness the brutality that occurred here over those years.

The view of the local high school from the top of the Colosseum. I applied a couple filters to bring out the virga.

I’m guessing that the patrons of the colosseum went over to that church after they witnessed the brutality here. They still use this arena for theater and music events and many of the famous pop artists perform here, I’m guessing some of the acts would be quite brutal to me.

I believe the colosseum in Rome is round, this one is oval.

Nimes is know for its Palm Trees and Crocodiles. They were adopted many years ago after the city founder came back from invading Egypt, apparently trophies from that region. Nimes does have many palm trees now but no Crocodiles.

More crocodiles, these hang in city hall.

Obligatory Bike Art.

Most people don’t believe me when I tell them that denim was invented in Nimes, France, but it is true because “de Nimes” means “of Nimes” and it was shorted to denim because that’s what Americans do. Well, this is the actual shop were denim was invented. It was closed today which is a good thing for my wallet as the folks I was with would certainly would have purchased some original denim de Nimes.

This is called the “Square House”, it is not square but like the colosseum it was built in the 1st century.

Random statue.

We came upon the Gardens of the Fountain and wow, it was beautiful!

I can’t shoot this enough!

The Fountain from the Garden of the Fountain.

This was not built in the 1st century, more like the 18th.

The fall colors are not going to hang on much longer.

Finally, this area appears to be the source of the water.
