McCrystal Lake – Payette National Forest, Idaho

On a super glorious morning, Rich and I decided to head up to a local favorite, McCrystal Lake. It’s been way too long since I visited McCrystal Lake so I knew today was going to be fun. This is not the greatest photograph in the world but it does show Platt Peak (center image) of which I will be visiting soon.

Looking northish we had great views of many Lick Creek Peaks.

To reach the lake we must go up and over a pretty good ridge. I love this spot because it offers the best views of the Gunsight which is an amazing feature in the ridge near Buckhorn Mountain.

This image was taken back in September of 2021 from the top of the Gunsight looking back towards our ridge today. (check out that trip report here.) I’m hoping to return to this spot in a couple of weeks….. I’ve been talking about doing that since September of…… 2021.

After a bit, we arrive at the lake and Fashionista Rich starts chopping water.

What a glorious spot!

Gentle breezes and lack of proper equipment put a real damper on Rich’s fly fishing. In fly fishing terms, he basically tied some string and a bobber to a stick and fished with that.

When Rich picked me up today we talked about a freak thunderstorm last night that had started some fires in the valley…… after a breezy morning we both had lumps in our throats as we climbed back over the ridge. Smoke season appears to have finally arrived.
