Granite Mountain – Payette National Forest, Idaho

Scroll down to content

A quick check of the forecast this morning and I saw we had a 5 percent chance of precipitation. Art and I wanted to climb Granite Mountain and all signs pointed to YES!

Down below, Goose Lake. If you get a chance, ask Art about finding fishing lures there, he really emphasized that story with me today!

Granite Mountain is one of the few climbs with a relatively easy trail to the top. As we worked our way up, the skies became threatening.

It was about this point that my camera went into the backpack and the rain, wind, then snow set in.

As we hunkered down for a while, I pulled the iPhone and managed to snap this image. You might say that all hell broke out for a bit. Yes, that is truly sideways snow!

After a goodly amount of time, we were moving again only with really interesting skies.

This view looks down into the Salmon River Drainage towards Rigins.

Looking south, you can just make out Cascade Reservoir.

The Lick Creek Mountains. How many peaks can you name? Art and I have been up most of them.

Further up the ridge.

At the top of the mountain , Art takes in the view of the lookout. What you can’t see is the cold wind.

At the top, I did what I many times do which is FaceTime Nicole. Turns out that her and One Adam 12 were climbing as well in Virginia….. If you look closely, you can see the parking lot 500 feet below.

More Lick Creek Mountains.

As we came off the peak, another wave of threatening clouds appeared.

Luckily, there was no lightning and thunder today, just cold winds.

Again, do not adjust your screens, it was really that red!

Finally, I applied a few filters and give you this image of Long Valley with a cloud cap.

    1. Hi Rosemary! Those are not actually flowers but small shrubs. We call them Fireweed but I’m not sure what their actual name is…. they are quite dramatic this time of year. Hope you are well.
