Twin Peaks – Payette National Forest – Valley County, Idaho

I have been in town for several weeks now and still have not had the opportunity to meet up with Craig and Dakota. The moon, planets, and stars alined this weekend so we decided to tackle a close in favorite, Twin Peak(s).

We started off at the Boulder Creek Trailhead and made the trek up to Boulder Lake, along the way we glimpsed our target going in and out of the clouds above.

Below us and under the cloud deck you can make out the green valley below.

Arriving at Boulder Lake we find winter! Winter happens to be Dakota’s favorite season and you can tell by the smile on her face that she is in her happy place!

A frozen Boulder Lake with False Buckhorn Mountain in the distance. Why do we call it False Buckhorn? Because the actual summit of Buckhorn Mountain is tucked behind this high point and False Buckhorn is actually only the ridge leading to the summit.

After trekking a while across the snow, we near the summit of North Twin Peak. It is difficult to capture how steep the slope is to the summit of these mountains but if you check out the trees on the right side of the image it gives you some prospective.

Approaching the summit you can see Buckhorn Mountain in the clouds behind Craig. I think Dakota is already waiting for us on the summit.

Near the summit we are right at the cloud level as we go in and out of the fog. Below is the valley with Lake Payette image right.

A man and his dog standing on the summit block.

The first peak of the season had us all happy. Right above Dakota is South Twin Peak and to the right is Jug Mountain which will be on our target list soon.

After having lunch on the summit, we head down the snow field to Louis Lake. Dakota waits patiently for us and can’t figure out why we can’t keep up. A sharp eye can pick out a frozen Louis Lake and the valley below mid image.

Finally, an image of Louis Lake with the top of Boulder Mountain in the clouds. Check out this blog post here to see a similar shot with Jug Mountain in all it’s glory
