Early morning at Stonebraker Ranch, if there is a more beautiful place to watch the sunrise in Idaho, I haven’t seen it!

Cottonwood Butte is off in the distance. I have a trail work crew going in there at the end of August, and yes, everything you see in these photographs is part of the Frank Church Wilderness, it is vast!

Trudging up the West Fork of Chamberlain Creek Trail with full packs and tools.

Indian Paint Brush!

Base Camp at Tumbledown Bridge. FYI there is no bridge at Tumbledown Bridge…..apparently it fell down.

After setting up camp, it was time to work. Pam and Mary cut one of the first of which will be literally be thousands of logs.

Half our group hike out to the end of our work the previous day and half the crew started from camp. Like building the transcontinental railroad, we met in the middle and hiked back to camp together. Notice Kjeil’s shirt? Over the next week it gradually transforms from light green to brown until the first re-supply arrives. Maybe gradually is the wrong work, perhaps quickly?

Back in base camp it was time for dinner and time to get to know each other.

Kjeil put up his rain tarp, not for rain but for shade. It was pretty dang hot at the bottom of the canyon and not much shade at this camp. We were surprised to wake up to frost the next morning. Two days down, nineteen more to go!
