Today, John, Jim and I headed up Lick Creek Road for a local hike to Crystal Lake. There was about 2 or 3 inches of snow in town but as we headed up the road, the snow quickly got deeper and deeper.

We figured there was about 9 or 10 inches on the road were we parked but soon we were hiking in snow above our knees.

Snowshoes would have been a good choice!

Generally, I figure its about 2 hours from departure at my house to first cast on Crystal Lake. Today, after about 3 hours of slogging, we reached the saddle above the lake.

The temperature up here was not that cold but with sweaty base layers, a brisk breeze, and a 15 minute lunch break, we all had the chills and decided to turn around and head home. At this point the snow was almost waist deep in some places and we figured it was probably another 45 minutes to the lake.

Winter is here to stay in the back country!
