Well, I was off line for a while as I battled a pretty good case of Montezuma’s Revenge but now have started to recover. So….back to work!

The next stop up for us were the Maya Ruins in Tikal National Park. I came here knowing a little bit about the Maya civilization but did not realize the full extent of their empire.

With very little expectations, we first came up on this structure. Pretty dang cool.

The ruins just kept going and going and the pyramids kept getting bigger.

Besides the pyramids, there were lots of housing project, etc.

More ruins.

Finally, the main plaza, WOW!

This was quite an empire back in the day.

All of these ruins were totally taken over by the jungle and the Guatemalans have slowly reclaimed the stone structures.

Maya ruins are found all over Central America, it reminds me a little of the Roman Ruins in Europe.

Spanish moss and stone structures.

Finally, from the top of one of the pyramids, you can see how the jungle engulfs the ruins.

Next up we head east and cross the boarder into Belize.

Apparently the relationship between Guatemala and Belize is not great so we are forced to exit our bus, cross the border and get into a Belizean Bus.

Luckily it was a fairly easy process.

This one armed soldier appears to be in charge of keeping the bad guys out.

Made it through!
