La Fortuna to Puerto Jiménez, Costa Rica

Today was a transfer day down to the south of Costa Rica. It would be an 8 hour drive but only an hour by plane.

Our pilots taking a break before the flight.

Along the way we had great views of the Pacific Coast.

The whale tail peninsula, I wonder why they call it that?

Finally we approach the airport over the Golfo Dulce, one of only 4 tropical fjords in the world.

Upon arrival we noticed that the airport was located next to the cemetery….

At our next hotel we are reminded that it is still the Christmas season and that we will be taking our tree down when we return to McCall.

Of course even with the transfer we are still going to ride our bikes. The Backroads support crew drove all the way down from La Fortuna last night so we could ride today. They are amazing!

Palm Plantation. From where palm oil is produced.

More Costa Rican cows.

Here is a lone pasture tree with an interesting living fence post.

Old world Costa Rica meets new world cycling.

Rio Rincoin.

Costa Rica disbanded their military in 1949. I believe that in 1949 the pilot of this helicopter landed here and walked home.

Blue boats.

Lunch at a tropical paradise!

Finally, everyone in our group had a boat ride home in the Golfo Dulce while Raj and I decided to do a two man team time trial back to the hotel. We had an amazing support crew. Thanks Y’all! Thank you to Melissa for the photo!

  1. Hi, Dave: Loving your Costa Rica photos. Do you know anything about that helicopter?  I think it might be a German model, or maybe a short lived American manufacturer named Pisecki.  Wish you knew the whole story! R2
