JP Memorial – Twenty Mile Lakes (Day 1) – Payette National Forest, Idaho

Every year during the third week of September I do my best to honor the memory of my good friend John. This year we had grandiose plans of doing a crazy, beat down adventure with as many as a dozen friends and relatives of John into the Frank Church – a true honor for his 70th birthday….. for various reasons, our adventure was paired back, the beat down was mellowed and the dozen dwindled to John’s brother Tom, Art (sort of), and myself.

Our adventure selection was the Twenty Mile Lake Basin, the re-creation of a day hike John and I did in 2018. Check that out here. This view looks up Twenty Mile Creek on our way up.

Taking a break on the way up. Tom and I were full packing it while Art was just going for the day. His job, to build us a fire on this cool misty day.

After a goodly amount of time, we arrived at North Lake. In the distance, Storm Dome. It was time for lunch.

A little additional hiking and we arrived at our lake and set up base camp. The plan, mine this basin out visiting multiple lakes and peaks over the next few days.

We arrived mid afternoon and spent much of the next few hours setting up camp and huddling under the rain tarp. We knew that our first day that we would be battling the back end of a storm system that was on it’s way out. Right before sunset, the weather broke and I headed over to the lake for a photo shoot.

In the distance, Storm Peak. From this prospective, Storm Peak doesn’t look by much but at about 9100 feet it is one of the tallest peaks in this area.

More sunset images.

This time with a floating log.

Art headed back to civilization while Tom and I settled in and properly honored John on his 70th Birthday.
