ITA – Grotto Creek Trail #620 (Day 3) – Selway Bitterroot Wilderness, Idaho

This time of year, forest fires are part of the experience in the wilderness. While not that close to us, a change in winds has started pushing smoke our way.

Here is another morning image of the lake, can you see anything unusual about this image? I flipped it upside down, it is tough to tell the difference between the hillside and the reflection but indeed, the reflection is on the top.

Jenny makes her way through the smoke during the morning commute to our work area.

At the top of the ridge, the crew gathers up before heading down the Grotto Trail. Every day now we are working down the ridge and our commute to the tools gets longer.

Looking northeast the smoke seems a little better.

The crew continues the commute down the Grotto Creek Trail.

When we get back to work, Clay demonstrates the prone and shaded cutting position. On day two it took a bit before we were up to full speed.

Brian and Carl preparing to work.

I’m not exactly sure why Carl and Brian took such an aggressive angle on this log but it seems to be working.

As we enter the burn things get a little dirty.

We had formed two cutting crews and spent the day leap frogged each other.

Yes, there is a trail somewhere in this burn. Before.

There it is! After.

Eventually all these standing burned trees will be coming down. ITA job security.

Jenny and Clay cutting burned logs. Before.

After.

By the end of the day we had worked our way out of the burn and back into green and much cleaner areas. We take a break before heading back the now 3 miles to base camp.
