Jug Handle Mountain – Payette National Forest, Idaho

Scroll down to content

One of our annual and local climbs is Jug Mountain. Craig has sold his house and is moving to a far away place so this will be his last regular hike in our area. I dubbed this “Craig’s Farewell Hike”…..although he promises to occasionally return! Jug Mountain always looks good in reflection on Louie Lake.

Looking south off Jug Mountain one sees Lake Cascade with West Mountain in the background. What a gorgeous day!

Today’s characters, Tom, Art, and the man of honor, Craig.

We usually do this climb in late May so it feels a little weird not climbing on snow.

My back yard, the Lick Creek Mountains.

Time to start our decent.

Photographs never relate the steepness of this mountain or any other.

Looking down on Louie Lake off the nose of Jug Mountain. It is about 1000 feet below. In the distance are the Payette Lakes and beyond that on the horizon are the Seven Devils.

More Lick Creek Mountains.

Now a final image of Jug Mountain at Louie Lake. It has a different feel later in the day.
