Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Jill and I met up with Larry and Mary Ellen for a bike tour in South Dakota and no trip to SD is complete without a visit to Wall Drug…… google it!

From there we headed out to the Badlands. The first 8 miles was pretty stark.

Eight miles of fast vast grasslands.

Then a turn of the worm and its the Badlands appear.

By now Jill was way up the road so it turn into me shooting Larry and Zizz.

Interesting knife edge ridges and puffy clouds. How can you make this image better?

Add a cyclist!

Larry drops this decent and trys to stay under the speed limit.

Around the next corner, trouble! This giant bull bison was charging down the road straight at us then turned and headed for Larry and Zizz. I didn’t know what to do, throw my bike down and help Larry protect Zizz or take pictures…. I took pictures and got the following sequence.

This bison was briskly trotting and looked pretty pissed.

Larry and Zizz were getting out of his way and suddenly I realized that I might be the next victim.

I got few panicked photos of the ground while scrambling out of the way.

The he rolls on by and heads the other direction. Now generally a bison wouldn’t scare me but when this big boy is charging right by you and there is no protection at all, it will pucker ya.

No harm no foul and we were on your way again.

The colors and layers were amazing.

Larry exerts his will on us up the hills.

Clouds, nice temperatures, and a tailwind, all is good.

A few scattered trees.

Grasslands and Badlands.

Such interesting terrain.

The love birds.

“Larry, suck in your gut!”

Shooting images for the Backroads catalog.

Later in the day Larry establishes the solo break.

More Badlands.

One final image of the first day of the SD tour. Sorry for the quick and dirty blog but its on to Day 2!
