Sunset Cone and Peak 6929 – Butte County, Idaho

Scroll down to content

The weather came in the next day as predicted so Brian and I spend a few hours in the morning hunkered down.

We managed to get a pretty good camp site here at the Craters of the Moon then took to searching Listofjohn for some random high points to climb if the weather breaks.

Late in the morning it appears we have a weather window!

First up, Sunset Cone.

Despite the threatening weather, the views were good.

Not far in the distance, trouble.

Looking south at the buttes of Idaho.

The top of Sunset Peak and in the distance right is our next peak.

About here we are feeling pretty good about life.

Looking back at Sunset Cone.

Heading up 6929 we look south at Sunset Cone and off in the distance, Big Southern.

Same view a few minutes later.

Heading jump the ridge to 6929.

Idaho in pastels.

Higher up the ridge we get our first close up view of the peak.

This will be about as green as the desert will be this year and it was amazing.

Brian approaches the summit rock.

Summit!

Looking back down over Craters of the Moon.

Snow in the high country…… That cloud looks pretty dark.

More summit views.

That cloud is dark and moving this way!

One last shot looking south and it was time for the rain gear and to beat feet back to camp.

A quick snap shot looking back at our peak, the window has closed.

Time to hit the highway. It was a great trip and although we did not get all of our objectives, it was a fun week.
