ITA – Waterfall Trail – Frank Church Wilderness, Idaho (Day 6)

Morning started early on Day 6. The packer had requested a “Break of Day” start so we loaded up camp and gathered up backpacks and tools for the journey out.

Tom and Art head out for the 12 mile hike back to the Flying B Ranch. It was nice to be carrying only day packs and no tools.

Confluence of Big Creek and the Middle Fork of the Salmon.

Scott takes a moment to check out the Waterfall Creek Crossing. It was definitely flowing more than a few days ago and had quite a roar. Without a bridge over this crossing, the Middle Fork Trail would be impassable this time of year.

Several days of warm weather down low in the canyon had given everything a light green hue.

The Middle Fork was looking more like chocolate milk.

At times if felt like we were hiking in a pastel painting.

Art makes the climb up and over the ridge at Woolard Creek. You can just make out the trail on the hillside in front of us as well as Tom and Carl standing at the top.

At the top of Woolard Creek Ridge, the boys take in a few moments in the morning sun.

Middle Fork Trail in mid May.

Down in these parts it seems that many things are named after rattlesnakes…. Rattlesnake Springs, Rattlesnake Cave, Rattlesnake Creek, etc. I’m surprised we only saw one of these guys.

After a goodly walk, The Flying B Airstrip.

The cactus were in full bloom now and although I am not a flower photographer Tom requested a photo.

After a fair bit of time at the Flying B, the pack team arrives with our gear.

Camping is a little more civilized at the Flying B Ranch, grassy camp spots, hot showers, and a warm dinner and breakfast. We settled in for a nice evening and our flight out in the morning.
